A Fish Called Wanda

By Brit | September 10, 2008

The first night of my P.T. Anderson Decal was last night.  I’m really excited.  Everyone who was taking the class seemed interested and intelligent.  I’m looking forward to the coming semester.

I got a new betta.  My other male one (Elliott) has been looking depressed.  I got a female baby and named her Wanda.  I love her personality…she’s super curious and comes right up to the glass when I come near her tank.

I think I’m going to lay out in Willard Park for a while.  It’s a beautiful day and the big trees are leaving huge patches of shade with my name on them.

Pete’s visiting this weekend!  Yay!

the tide recedes but leaves behind bright seashells in the sand.
the sun goes down, but gentle warmth still lingers on the land.
the music stops, and yet it echoes on in sweet refrains…
for every joy that passes, something beautiful remains - m.d. hughes

Today has been quite productive thus far. I went shopping for comfy walking shoes for when the weather gets cold and found some great aerosoles for $40 marked down from $120. Really cute and comfy.

Then I arranged a parking place close to my house for $400 for the semester.

Sulo brought me a mini fridge for my room so I can keep my food separate (cause I really like that). Now I’m going to buy readers, move my car, and maybe go to the flea market by the Ashby BART.

I just made strawberry jam-filled pastries. All my housemates are in love.

I woke up around 930 this morning to the sound of a jackhammer. Those things are extremely loud.

Upon waking up, I made an english muffin with peanut butter on it and some earl grey tea. I snacked while working on some things for my decal.

Thennnn we brought two amps into my room and Patrick, Alex, and I jammed on guitar, bass, and autoharp, respectively.

It’s almost 2pm. I need to go shoe shopping but I’m really just not in the mood to go. So instead, I’ll sit up on this balcony and listen to Grandaddy, enjoying the breeze.

My wrist is in crazy pain.

Philosophy of Mind

By Brit | August 28, 2008

Learning to relax was the healthiest thing I have ever done. It didn’t really happen until I moved out last year and became able to create a space for myself that suited my needs. These needs are random things that I guess I could only ever really obtain living out of my parent’s house. I’m sitting alone again on the balcony, smoking cigarettes and listening to Erik Satie. I’m so obsessed with Satie. There’s a plainness to his music that I love.

I had my first meeting of Philosophy of the Mind with Professor Searle today. Two of the books for the course are Mind and Intentionality…He wrote them both. He also wrote the third book for the class. He seems like an incredible professor and I’m interested by the subject. I was proud of myself this morning—I woke up at 8 am to get ready for class and was ready to leave to walk there by 9. I rock! (and getting up early isn’t too bad).

First day of classes

By Brit | August 27, 2008

ISF seems like it’ll be a fairly easy course. My professor is Renate Holub…she looks like this: Prof. Holub

She says we have ONE 3-5 page paper, a mid-term where we get the questions in advance, and a take-home final. That’s a very very limited workload, so that should be nice. Her first lecture was moderately interesting. She talked about Marx and where Marx derived his philosophies from.

I also had PACS today. Jerry Sanders, the professor, is in Buenos Aires until next week so we didn’t really have class. The GSIs just told us where we could get the reader and to come back next Wednesday for lecture.

I made sauteed tofu for lunch and now I’m relaxing and watching Twin Peaks (season 2, episode 20) out on my lovely balcony. Tonight, we are having a barbecue at our house. Sulo is cooking so it’ll be delicious, I’m sure.

p.s.-I miss someone.

Day one of classes

By Brit | August 27, 2008

Today is my first day of classes for the Fall 2008 semester.  My courses are: Philosophy of Mind, ISF 100A (Intro to Social Theory and Cultural Analysis), History 159 (European Economic History), and PACS 125 (War, Culture, And Society).

I’m excited. Today I have ISF 100A from 10-12 and then PACS 125 from 2-4.  The first days of classes are always interesting.  ISF is in the Goldman School of Public Policy building which is pretty much the building exactly as far away as possible from my house.  It might take me 40 minutes to walk there.  I’ll leave early and then bring things to occupy my time with for the two hour break instead of coming home in between.
